All this made my second open-world experience all the more special. I also loved how the map wasn't littered with so many markers - it felt like more of an adventure of discovery where I felt the encouragement to put my own markers, though I wish there was more variety to the marker types. I also ventured into areas I don't think I was supposed to go to yet. I spent ages just exploring the world without progressing the story and doing quests, just to see if I could get the Master Sword early or if it would be locked behind story progression - I was delighted and surprised at the result. ![]() The lack of hand-holding, the sense of adventure and atmosphere, the different use of music and sound, the visual style, the open-nature and traversal of the world, all blew my mind and made me appreciate this game. From the moment I started this game, I was blown away, not just for the fact that I was playing this on a portable device, but the way the game began and how the design was so different than the 3D Zelda games I was used to. Also, the 3D Zelda games after Majora's Mask weren't for me because they were just too slow and boringly-paced for my tastes. Prior to this, I had played the great The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt and its wonderful expansion packs, particularly the brilliant Hearts of Stone. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I haven't played many open-world games so far.I feel kind of dumb that my entire top 5 are Switch games (or games I played on my Switch, in Tetris and Sonic's cases) but it is what it is. Super Mario Odyssey - My only disappointment with this game is that Nintendo spoiled nearly every Kingdom in advance. And remarkably it nearly managed to live up to my impossible expectations. Sonic Mania - Did I say I felt like I've been waiting for BotW for a decade? Well, I really have been waiting for this game for a decade, if not two.As it is, Tetris DS still barely edges out for me. Puyo Puyo Tetris - If you could disable the voices in solo mode (I understand why it's there for multiplayer battles-if gives you an idea of what your opponent is up to without looking away from your screen) then this would be the best Tetris game ever. ![]() The game's flaws don't detract from how unique and enjoyable and different this game is from any other shooter I've ever played. Splatoon 2 - Having never owned a Wii U, I never got to experience Splatoon's gameplay until now, and holy shit it's fun.I feel like I've been waiting for this game for over a decade. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I understand why people would say it doesn't feel enough like a Zelda game (considering it basically ignores every game from ALttP onward) but for me this is the most "Zelda-y" Zelda has ever felt.Notable games I played that would make a second quality top ten in any other year would include Zelda, Wolfenstein 2, Nier, Yakuza Zero, Rime, Steamworld Dig 2, Golf Story, Snake Pass, Evil Within 2, Cosmic Star Heroine, Metroid. Its the only game I haven't played that I think could possibly make he list. If I play AC:Origins (or maybe Mordor) before the deadline, maybe my list will change(It did). Horizon Zero Dawn - The story and creativity of the world made this a truly enjoyable open world to explore.I never would've believed it could be this good. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - I bought a Switch for this.Persona 5 - The style and some of the characters helped this make the list, though ultimately it's a bit of a slog.Thimbleweed Park - A true throwback to everything great about old adventure games. What Remains of Edith Finch - The interesting twists on "walking sim" and amazing story make this wonderfully memorable.Super Mario Odyssey - Pure fun, the first time I've liked a mainline Mario game since 64.Not all of the writing met the same heights, but I truly enjoyed the world, side quests, and characters. I do think it rivals Witcher 3 in many ways. ![]() Assassins Creed Origins - One of the best games in the series.I loved the episodic nature of the door system. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd - I love this series, and this game was the best of them all.Hollow Knight - The best metroidvania ever.Divinity: Original Sin 2 - A truly huge improvement over an already fantastic game.
